Agneepath Remake Movie: Hrithik Roshan play a lead role: Agneepath, a remake of the similarly titled 1990 film headlining Amitabh Bachchan, will start production early next year.

The film will be produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Production which under Karan's late father, Yash Johar, had produced the original directed by Mukul Anand.

Karan tells TOI that by making Agneepath he will be fulfilling a promise that he made to his father.

The film won Amitabh Bachchan a national award but bombed at the box office, something Yash Johar couldn't reconcile to.

"Karan, we must remake Agneepath," Yash told Karan.

After his father passed away, Karan couldn't see himself directing the remake, so when his assistant in My Name is Khan, Karan Malhotra, offered to direct the film Karan was immediately ready to produce it.

The film will headline Hrithik as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, the role essayed by Bachchan in the original.

"Duggu has heard the script and he loved it. He is as thrilled about this film as Karan (Malhotra) and I are," Johar tells TOI.

Johar says he will announce the rest of the cast shortly. The buzz is that Priyanka Chopra will be the female lead as Hrithik's love interest; Nana Patekar will fill in for Danny Denzongpa as the villainous Kancha Cheena.

Mithun Chakraborty's role as Krishnan Iyer MA is being dropped from the film. Instead, a new character will be introduced in the first half of the film. The role is being offered to one of Bollywood's finest actors. (How many such actors are there, we wonder?)
